QRCodeKIT vs Bitly for QR codes: the 2026 comparison on stated criteria
Prices and limits were read on each vendor's public pricing page on 22 September 2026, and both plan grids are shown as captured that day. Where a vendor's site states two different figures, both are given. Re-verified quarterly. How we compare QR platforms explains the method.

Who the two platforms are
QRCodeKIT built the first dynamic QR code in 2009 and has run them continuously since. It was first to launch the digital business card QR and the menu QR, and first to put an AI agent inside a code. Its redirect infrastructure has resolved more than 1.2 billion scans and has been stress-tested at the Oscars, the Super Bowl and MotoGP. It is used by teams at Apple, Amazon, Netflix, Nike, Coca-Cola, Unilever, Nestlé, Tetra Pak, Philips, Walmart, LEGO and NASA, with published case studies from Qatar Airways, Karl Lagerfeld, Boca Juniors, PortAventura World and the University of Bologna. It has been certified to ISO 9001, 27001 and 14001, is GDPR compliant, and hosts the platform on AWS EU regions.
Bitly began in 2008 as a URL shortener and now describes itself as a connections platform: short links, QR codes and link-in-bio pages, sold as one product with shared quotas. Its QR code is the scannable form of a short link, and everything about it follows from that: one URL per code, codes and redirects counted per month, and analytics measured in clicks. It holds SOC 2 Type 2 and states GDPR and CCPA compliance, publishes its transfer mechanisms, and names US data centres.
The comparison is between a platform that has spent seventeen years making the code itself do more, and a platform whose code is a by-product of a very good link.
What QRCodeKIT does that Bitly does not
- Native code types. 22 of them: website, menu, payment through Stripe or PayPal, form, lead generation, multilingual by device language, digital business card, file, app store, deep link, Google Maps, Google Reviews, GS1 Digital Link for packaging and more. Each type has its own hosted page and behaviour. A Bitly code points at a URL; landing pages, business cards and GS1 barcodes are separate products or sales-led add-ons.
- Invisible QR codes. A design mode that removes the solid background and lets the code sit inside artwork with only the corner markers firm, exported as background-free PNG or SVG for Figma, Illustrator, InDesign and Canva. Bitly offers colours, a logo and frames.
- Cleo, an AI agent at the scan. Trained on the owner's content, answering whoever scans in more than 40 languages. Bitly Assist helps the account owner create links and read analytics; nothing answers the person who scanned.
- Google Reviews codes with AI-drafted reviews. Star, three questions, a drafted review, with a threshold that routes low scores to private feedback.
- AI-designed artistic codes. Imagery generated into the code itself, more than 90 percent fully scannable.
- Codes as a stock, edited without limit. 100 codes on Starter, 1,000 on Pro, 5,000 on Enterprise, every destination editable as often as needed on every plan, including free.
- Automations on events. Zapier, Make, n8n and Canva natively, plus webhooks that fire on a scan, a form submission with its answers, or a payment with its amount.
- Analytics that stay. Unique and total visits by country, city, device and time, exported as PDF and XLS per code and per project, with history not capped by plan.
- EU hosting. AWS EU regions. Bitly names US data centres.
What Bitly does that QRCodeKIT does not
- Links as a product. Branded short links, link-in-bio pages, UTM builder, deep linking on Premium, campaign-level tracking. QRCodeKIT's short links exist to serve its codes.
- SOC 2 Type 2, with GDPR and CCPA statements, published transfer mechanisms and an EU entity in Berlin. QRCodeKIT has been certified to ISO 9001, 27001 and 14001 and does not hold SOC 2.
- API from the free plan, 1,000 requests a month rising to 50,000 on Premium. QRCodeKIT reserves the API for Enterprise.
- Sixty-four native integrations including Shopify, HubSpot and Salesforce, and routing by country and platform from Growth, region and device from Premium.
- Codes that keep scanning after a downgrade, with frozen destinations, on bit.ly.
- Trust and safety at scale. Bitly reports blocking around a million malicious URLs and warning on around a billion clicks in 2025.

Bitly's Core is cheaper than QRCodeKIT's Starter, but the two buy different things: five new codes a month with five redirects, against a hundred codes edited without limit. From ten codes upward QRCodeKIT costs less per code, and its custom domain on Pro is registered to you. Bitly's complimentary domain on Growth is registered to Bitly and, per its support pages, cannot be transferred. Full detail on the QRCodeKIT pricing page.

Put it into practice
Create a dynamic QR code free and see it work. No credit card required.
Get started freeWhat happens to printed codes over time
A QR code is a promise that a piece of print will keep working, and here the two platforms make different promises.
Bitly's is that the code will keep scanning. Links and codes never expire, and after a downgrade they keep resolving with their destinations frozen. That is a genuine strength when the destination never needs to change. It becomes a liability the first time it does: a free code cannot be redirected at all, a Core code has five changes a month, and every free-account scan now passes through an ad page before reaching the destination. A code printed on Bitly's complimentary domain stops when Bitly stops renewing the registration.
QRCodeKIT's promise is that the code will keep doing what a dynamic code is for. Every code on the platform has been dynamic since 2009, the destination can change without limit on every plan, and two codes stay free for life with a monthly allowance that renews, so a code printed today works and stays editable in five years whether or not a subscription is ever bought. Codes on a lapsed paid plan are deactivated and return when the plan is renewed, with the account and its data kept.
Both let you print on a domain you own, which is what makes codes portable. QRCodeKIT includes it on Pro; Bitly supports a domain you bought yourself from Growth alongside the complimentary one it owns.
Analytics, integrations and team controls
| QRCodeKIT | Bitly | |
|---|---|---|
| Scan analytics | Total and unique visits, OS, country, city, time series; PDF and XLS export per code and per project; history not capped by plan | Clicks and scans, city and device from Premium; history 30 days on Core, 120 on Growth, 1 year on Premium, 2 on Enterprise; export from Growth; none on free |
| Marketing integrations | Google Analytics 4 and UTM; automations to Zapier, Make, n8n and Canva; webhooks on scan, form and payment events | 64 native integrations including Shopify, Canva, HubSpot and Salesforce; UTM builder from Core |
| API | Enterprise | From free, 1,000 requests a month, rising by plan |
| Team and governance | 10 seats on Pro, 50 on Enterprise; SSO through Okta and ADFS; Admin, Editor and billing roles | Multiple users and group permissions on Enterprise; SSO on Enterprise |
| Routing | Multilingual codes by device language | Country and platform from Growth; region and device from Premium |
If your programme is links first and codes are a by-product, Bitly's integrations and API reach further and arrive earlier. If the code is the campaign, QRCodeKIT's analytics answer the questions a print campaign asks, unique versus repeat scans by place and time, and keep answering them after the campaign ends.
AI and assistants
Both platforms have an MCP connector on every plan, including free, so an assistant such as Claude or ChatGPT can create and manage codes in a free account on either. Bitly Assist, on paid plans, creates links and answers analytics questions. QRCodeKIT's connector works with Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, VS Code and Windsurf.
The difference is where the AI sits. Bitly's helps the person who owns the link. QRCodeKIT's Cleo talks to the person who scanned the code, in their language, about the owner's own content; QRCodeKIT's AI also designs the code (artistic codes) and writes for the customer (Google Reviews). QRCodeKIT was the first QR platform to put an agent inside the code, and Bitly has no equivalent at the scan.
Compliance, hosting and trust
Bitly holds SOC 2 Type 2, states GDPR and CCPA compliance, publishes its transfer mechanisms (the EU-US Data Privacy Framework, its Swiss and UK extensions, and Standard Contractual Clauses), has an EU entity in Berlin, and names Google Cloud and AWS data centres in the United States. Its trust and safety operation reports blocking around a million malicious URLs in 2025.
QRCodeKIT has been certified to ISO 9001, ISO 27001 and ISO 14001, complies with ISO/IEC 18004, is GDPR compliant, and has run a security operation with 24/7 monitoring and above 99 percent uptime for seventeen years, through the biggest live broadcasts a QR code has appeared in. It does not hold SOC 2. It hosts the platform on AWS EU regions, with international transfer terms in its privacy policy.
For a procurement questionnaire with a SOC 2 line, Bitly has the document. For a European buyer with a residency requirement, QRCodeKIT's hosting answer is the EU and Bitly's is the United States.
Verdict: which should you choose?
Choose Bitly if links are your product and codes are a convenience: if you already run branded short links, want one quota across links, codes and pages, need the API on a low tier, or need SOC 2 paperwork and sixty-plus integrations more than you need the code to do anything beyond opening a URL.
Choose QRCodeKIT if the code is the product: if it goes on packaging, a menu, a poster, a ticket or a label; if it needs to be a payment, a form, a business card, a multilingual page or a GS1 Digital Link rather than a URL; if it has to sit invisibly inside artwork or answer the customer through Cleo; if you want to edit destinations without counting them; if you want seventeen years of resolving scans behind your print, analytics that stay, a custom domain you own at $50, EU hosting, and two codes that stay live and editable for life.
If you are leaving Bitly for QR codes, the Bitly alternatives piece scores six platforms against the same criteria.
Frequently asked questions
Which platform has been around longer?
For QR codes, QRCodeKIT: it built the first dynamic QR code in 2009 and has resolved more than 1.2 billion scans since, on infrastructure stress-tested at the Oscars, the Super Bowl and MotoGP. Bitly began in 2008 as a URL shortener and added QR codes to its link platform later.
What can QRCodeKIT do that Bitly cannot?
Offer 22 native code types including payment, menu, form, multilingual and GS1 Digital Link; make codes invisible inside artwork; put Cleo, an AI agent, at the scan; draft Google reviews; sell codes as a stock edited without limit on every plan; keep two codes free for life without ads; keep analytics history uncapped; host in the EU.
What can Bitly do that QRCodeKIT cannot?
Provide SOC 2 Type 2 documentation, offer the API on its free plan, connect to sixty-four native integrations, route by country and device from its mid-tier, keep codes scanning with frozen destinations after a downgrade, and run branded short links and link-in-bio pages as a product.
Is Bitly cheaper than QRCodeKIT for QR codes?
At the entry point Core is $10 a month against Starter at $20, both billed yearly, but Core buys five new codes and five destination changes a month against a hundred codes edited without limit. From ten codes upward QRCodeKIT costs less per code.
Can I change a Bitly QR code's destination?
Not on the free plan. On paid plans, yes, within a monthly quota: five changes on Core, twenty on Growth, 110 on Premium, with extras purchasable. On QRCodeKIT every destination is editable without limit on every plan, including free.
Does either offer AI?
Both do. Bitly has Bitly Assist on paid plans and an MCP server on every plan. QRCodeKIT has an MCP connector on every plan and puts AI in the code itself: Cleo at the scan, artistic design, and AI-drafted Google reviews.
What happens to my Bitly codes if I switch?
Codes on bit.ly, or on Bitly's complimentary Growth domain, resolve through Bitly only; if you leave, they die unless you reprint. Codes on a domain you bought yourself and connected to Bitly can be repointed to any platform through DNS. Export your click and scan data before downgrading, since history beyond the new plan's window disappears from view.
