QRCodeKIT vs Hovercode: the 2026 comparison on stated criteria

Prices and limits were read on each vendor's public pricing page on 2 October 2026 and match the plan grids shown below, captured on 22 September. Where a vendor's site states two different figures, both are given. Re-verified quarterly. How we compare QR platforms explains the method.

Who the two platforms are

QRCodeKIT built the first dynamic QR code in 2009 and has run them continuously since. It was first to launch the digital business card QR and the menu QR, and first to put an AI agent inside a code. Its redirect infrastructure has resolved more than 1.2 billion scans and has been stress-tested at the Oscars, the Super Bowl and MotoGP. It is used by teams at Apple, Amazon, Netflix, Nike, Coca-Cola, Unilever, Nestlé, Tetra Pak, Philips, Walmart, LEGO and NASA, with published case studies from Qatar Airways, Karl Lagerfeld, Boca Juniors, PortAventura World and the University of Bologna. It has been certified to ISO 9001, 27001 and 14001, is GDPR compliant, and hosts the platform on AWS EU regions.

Hovercode is a dynamic QR code and short-link tool made by Hovercode Ltd, a UK company incorporated in October 2023. Its homepage counts about 2.7 million trackable codes created and some 115 million scans. It is built around a generous free plan, short links and micro landing pages, sells four self-serve plans from free to $99 a month, and hosts on DigitalOcean in Frankfurt, Germany, stating GDPR compliance through EU data residency.

This is a comparison between a lean tool that makes dynamic codes inexpensive and a platform that has spent seventeen years making the code itself do more.

What QRCodeKIT does that Hovercode does not

  • Cleo, an AI agent at the scan. Trained on the owner's content, answering whoever scans in more than 40 languages. Hovercode's AI helps the account owner; nothing answers the person who scanned.
  • Invisible QR codes. A design mode that removes the solid background and lets the code sit inside artwork with only the corner markers firm, exported as background-free PNG or SVG for Figma, Illustrator, InDesign and Canva.
  • Google Reviews codes with AI-drafted reviews. A star, three questions, a drafted review, with a threshold that routes low scores to private feedback. Hovercode offers a free Google review link generator.
  • More native code types. 22 of them, including payment through Stripe or PayPal, menu and multilingual codes that serve the right language by device. Hovercode lists about nine.
  • Automations that are live today. Zapier, Make, n8n and Canva, plus webhooks on scan, form and payment events. Hovercode lists Zapier and Make as coming soon, with webhooks on Business Plus.
  • Seats on the mid-tier. Ten on Pro at $50, fifty on Enterprise, with Admin, Editor and billing roles and SSO through Okta or ADFS on Enterprise. Hovercode's Pro lists no team members; teams start on Business with ten.
  • Analytics that stay. History is not capped by plan. Hovercode keeps three months on free and twelve on Pro; unlimited history starts on Business.
  • A money-back policy. Seven days. Hovercode accepts refunds within 24 hours of purchase, and after that case by case.
  • ISO 9001, 27001 and 14001. Hovercode states GDPR compliance and points to the certifications of its hosting provider; it holds none of its own.

What Hovercode does that QRCodeKIT does not

  • A larger free tier. Three dynamic codes that never expire, with unlimited scans, plus three short links and a landing page. QRCodeKIT's two free codes get 100 scans each a month, renewing.
  • A cheaper custom domain. One on Pro at $12 a month, ten on Business and fifty on Business Plus. QRCodeKIT's starts on Pro at $50.
  • The API and bulk creation from $39. Hovercode's Business plan; QRCodeKIT reserves the API for Enterprise.
  • Monthly billing on every plan, with twelve months for the price of ten on yearly.
  • Figma, Chrome and Airtable integrations, alongside Canva.

On price, Hovercode wins at every tier. What the price buys is the difference. Hovercode's codes link to websites, PDFs, forms, landing pages, contacts, Wi-Fi and app stores. QRCodeKIT's also take payments, serve menus, switch language by device, sit invisibly inside artwork and talk back through Cleo, on a platform with seventeen years of resolving scans and three ISO certifications behind it. For a handful of codes on a flyer, Hovercode's free plan is hard to beat. For codes that carry a brand on packaging, menus and signage for years, the platform matters more than the price. What happens to printed codes over time

A QR code is a promise that a piece of print will keep working, and here the two platforms make similar promises on the free tier and different ones above it.

Both keep a few free codes alive for good. Hovercode's first three codes never expire and scan without limit; QRCodeKIT's two free codes stay editable and tracked for life with a monthly allowance that renews.

When a paid plan ends, Hovercode moves the account to the free plan: the first three codes stay active, the rest become inactive but are not deleted, and every code on your custom domain stops working until you resubscribe, when everything comes back. On QRCodeKIT, codes on a lapsed paid plan are deactivated and return when the plan is renewed, with the account and its data kept.

Both let you print on a domain you own, which is what makes codes portable: Hovercode from Pro at $12, QRCodeKIT from Pro at $50. A code printed on either platform's default domain resolves through that platform only.

Analytics, integrations and team controls

If you want the API, bulk creation and ten custom domains for under $40 a month, Hovercode reaches them first. If your codes feed automations on scans, forms and payments, need a team on the mid-tier, or have to keep their analytics for as long as the campaign lives, QRCodeKIT does that from Pro.

AI and assistants

Both platforms let an AI assistant run the account. Hovercode's MCP server, available on every plan, lets Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor create and restyle codes, shorten links, build landing pages and forms and read scan statistics. QRCodeKIT's MCP connector, also included on every plan, works with Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, VS Code and Windsurf.

Both also generate code artwork with AI. QRCodeKIT's artistic codes are a production feature: imagery generated into the code from a prompt or template, more than 90 percent fully scannable, and every one an editable dynamic code with analytics. Hovercode's AI art generator is, in its own words, "very much a prototype".

The difference is where the AI sits. Hovercode's helps the owner manage the account. QRCodeKIT's Cleo talks to the person who scanned the code, in their language, about the owner's own content, and its AI writes for the customer too (Google Reviews). QRCodeKIT was the first QR platform to put an agent inside the code, and Hovercode has no equivalent at the scan.

Compliance, hosting and trust

On hosting the two are level: both serve from the EU. Hovercode runs on DigitalOcean in Frankfurt, Germany, behind Cloudflare, and states GDPR compliance through EU data residency, with a data processing agreement on request. QRCodeKIT hosts on AWS EU regions, with international transfer terms in its privacy policy.

On certification they differ. QRCodeKIT has been certified to ISO 9001, ISO 27001 and ISO 14001, complies with ISO/IEC 18004, and has run a security operation with 24/7 monitoring and above 99 percent uptime for seventeen years, through the biggest live broadcasts a QR code has appeared in. Hovercode describes its own security measures and points to its hosting provider's SOC 2 and ISO 27001; it holds no certification of its own. For a procurement questionnaire that asks for the vendor's certificate, QRCodeKIT has one to send.

Verdict: which should you choose?

Choose Hovercode if you need a few dynamic codes, short links and simple landing pages at the lowest price: if three free codes with unlimited scans cover you, if you want a custom domain or the API for well under $50 a month, or if you work in Figma and Airtable and want codes there.

Choose QRCodeKIT if the code carries the brand: if it goes on packaging, a menu, a poster, a ticket or a label for years; if it needs to be a payment, a menu, a multilingual page or a GS1 Digital Link; if it has to sit invisibly inside artwork, answer customers through Cleo or draft their Google reviews; if a team needs seats and live automations without the top plan; if you want seventeen years and more than a billion scans behind your print, analytics that stay, a money-back policy, and ISO 9001, 27001 and 14001.

Frequently asked questions

Which platform has been around longer?

QRCodeKIT: it built the first dynamic QR code in 2009 and has resolved more than 1.2 billion scans since, on infrastructure stress-tested at the Oscars, the Super Bowl and MotoGP. Hovercode Ltd was incorporated in the UK in 2023, and its homepage reports about 115 million scans.

What can QRCodeKIT do that Hovercode cannot?

Put Cleo, an AI agent, at the scan; make codes invisible inside artwork; draft Google reviews with AI; create payment, menu and multilingual codes among 22 types; run live automations to Zapier, Make and n8n with webhooks on scan, form and payment events; include ten seats on Pro; keep analytics history uncapped; and refund within seven days, on a platform that has been certified to ISO 9001, 27001 and 14001.

What can Hovercode do that QRCodeKIT cannot?

Give three free dynamic codes with unlimited scans, include a custom domain from $12 a month and the API and bulk creation from $39, bill monthly on every plan, and connect to Figma, Chrome and Airtable.

Is Hovercode cheaper than QRCodeKIT?

Yes, at every tier. Hovercode's Pro is $12 a month for 100 codes and a custom domain; QRCodeKIT's Starter is $20 for 100 codes and Pro is $50 for 1,000 codes, ten seats and a custom domain. The difference is what the code can do and what stands behind it.

Do both have free plans that never expire?

Yes. Hovercode's three free codes never expire and have unlimited scans. QRCodeKIT's two free codes are editable and tracked for life, with 100 scans per code each month, renewing.

Does either offer AI?

Both do. Both have an MCP server on every plan, and both generate code artwork with AI: QRCodeKIT's artistic codes are a production feature, more than 90 percent fully scannable, while Hovercode calls its generator a prototype. Only QRCodeKIT puts AI at the scan, with Cleo, and drafts Google reviews.

Are both hosted in the EU?

Yes. Hovercode runs on DigitalOcean in Frankfurt, Germany; QRCodeKIT on AWS EU regions. Hovercode relies on its hosting provider's certifications, while QRCodeKIT has been certified to ISO 9001, 27001 and 14001 in its own right.
